QUITO, Ecuador (Interstat) — Substitute Cristian Zabala’s 58th-minute goal lifted Independiente del Valle to a 1-0 victory over Universidad Católica on Sunday in a Liga Pro match at Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa.

The decisive play was set up by midfielder Luis Moreno, who received a yellow card in the 32nd minute before assisting Zabala’s winner. The result defied pregame projections that heavily favored the home side. With the win, Independiente begins its league campaign 1-0-0, while Universidad Católica falls to 0-1-1.
