Late Drama Sees Gil Vicente, Rio Ave Draw in Primeira Liga Opener
BARCELOS, Portugal (Interstat) — Gil Vicente and Rio Ave opened their Primeira Liga seasons with a 2-2 draw Saturday in a match defined by late chaos at Estádio Cidade de Barcelos.
The visitors struck first through Murilo in the 39th minute, but Gil Vicente’s André Inácio leveled two minutes later. Rio Ave defender Antonio Espigare put his side ahead again in the 66th.
The match erupted in stoppage time. Gil Vicente substitute Pablo scored the equalizer in the 100th minute. The frantic close included seven yellow cards and a red card shown to Rio Ave’s Tamás Nikitscher in the 99th minute.
Both clubs begin the league campaign with a draw. The result defied pre-match projections that favored Rio Ave.
