West Virginia at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. (Interstat) — The High Point Panthers remained undefeated this season, rallying with a trio of second-half goals to defeat the West Virginia Mountaineers 3-2 in an NCAA men’s soccer match on Sunday.

A crowd of 4,913 at Vert Stadium saw the Panthers overcome a halftime deficit to extend their impressive run. The victory improved High Point’s record to six wins, no losses and two draws in NCAA competition, a mark that is mirrored across all competitions this season. West Virginia fell to five wins, three losses and two draws in both NCAA and overall play.

The match was a tense rematch of a 2-2 draw between the two teams on Sept. 23. This time, the Panthers found the late-game execution they needed to secure the win, narrowly outperforming the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 2-1 High Point victory. The analytics firm’s ELO system had given the Panthers a 69.90 percent probability to win.

West Virginia struck first, building a one-goal lead by the intermission. The Mountaineers’ defense successfully stifled High Point’s offensive efforts for the first 45 minutes, putting the home side under pressure.

The complexion of the game changed dramatically after the break. High Point’s comeback was fueled by its midfield, with all three goals coming from players in that position.

Noah Behrmann sparked the rally, leveling the score with a goal after a full 90 minutes of action. The Panthers then took the lead thanks to a contribution from substitute Mo Guettel, who found the net in the 55th minute after entering the match just 10 minutes prior.

The eventual game-winner came from another second-half substitute, Chris Niblock. He secured the victory for High Point with a goal in the 63rd minute, having been on the field for only four minutes. Forward Daniel Lugo was credited with an assist on one of the second-half tallies before his substitution in the 77th minute.

The match featured numerous substitutions as both coaches adjusted their tactics, with a flurry of changes occurring at halftime and throughout the second period. West Virginia was unable to find an equalizer despite the strategic shifts, seeing its two-match winning streak snapped. The Mountaineers had previously defeated Marshall 3-0 on Oct. 31 after falling to the same team 3-2 on Nov. 12.

High Point, which has not lost since the previous season, continued its dominant form. The Panthers were coming off a 5-0 rout of Winthrop on Nov. 1 and have outscored opponents significantly during their unbeaten start. The result solidifies High Point’s position as one of the form teams in the nation heading into the final stretch of the season.
