RECIFE, Brazil (Interstat) — Gremio opened its Serie A campaign with a dominant 4-0 victory over Sport Recife on Sunday at Estádio Adelmar da Costa Carvalho.

Substitute Carlos Vinícius scored twice in a three-minute span late in the first half, finding the net in the 29th and 31st minutes. Teammates Gustavo Martins Santos and Franco Cristaldo added goals in the 42nd and 48th minutes, respectively, to complete the rout. All four goals were assisted by different Gremio players.

The lopsided result defied a pregame projection that favored Gremio to win narrowly. Five players received yellow cards in the match, which marked a losing start to the season for the home side.
