Tennessee Tech W at Vanderbilt W
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team closed its regular season with a 2-0 victory over Tennessee Tech on Friday night at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.
In a match organized by the NCAA, the Commodores controlled the tempo from the outset against the visiting Golden Eagles. The win improved Vanderbilt’s record to 13 wins, 3 losses and 5 draws, while Tennessee Tech moved to 4 wins, 6 losses and 7 draws. An announced crowd of 1,277 watched the contest.
The game’s outcome aligned with pregame projections from Interstat, which had simulated a 2-0 Vanderbilt victory and gave the Commodores an 85 percent probability of winning based on its ELO rating system.
Vanderbilt broke through in the first half with a goal from defender Mary Beth McLaughlin. The Commodores doubled their lead later with a goal from midfielder Courtney Jones, securing the final margin.
The victory extended Vanderbilt’s unbeaten streak to four matches, a run that includes wins over Georgia and Alabama and a draw against LSU. The Commodores have been a formidable force at home, finishing their regular season slate with a strong defensive performance.
For Tennessee Tech, the loss continued a difficult stretch. The Golden Eagles have now recorded four consecutive draws in matches where they were held scoreless, including their previous outing against Southern Indiana. The team has found goals hard to come by, a trend that persisted against a stout Vanderbilt defense.
The two teams had met earlier in the season on Aug. 21, a match that resulted in a 6-0 road victory for Vanderbilt. Friday’s result, while less lopsided, demonstrated a similar dynamic between the in-state opponents.
Both coaches utilized their benches extensively, with a flurry of substitutions occurring throughout the match, particularly around the halftime break and again in the final 10 minutes. Vanderbilt made multiple changes to its lineup, managing player minutes ahead of potential postseason play.
The NCAA women’s soccer tournament selection process is next for Vanderbilt, which has positioned itself for a potential at-large bid following a successful regular season. Tennessee Tech’s season has now concluded.
