Utah State W at BYU W
PROVO, Utah (Interstat) — In a hard-fought NCAA women’s soccer match that defied pregame projections, the BYU Cougars and Utah State Aggies played to a 1-1 draw on Friday night in front of 3,566 fans.
The result saw both teams add a draw to their season ledgers in a physical in-state rivalry contest that featured extensive substitutions from both benches. The Aggies, who were given a low probability to win by statistical models, managed to secure a valuable road result against a Cougars squad that had dominated their previous meeting earlier in the season.
The game’s scoring opened early, setting the tone for the evening. BYU defender Mia Goettsche found the back of the net for the Cougars, providing her team with an initial advantage. The goal was assisted by forwards MacKenzee Vance and Mika Krommenhoek, who combined to set up the scoring play.
However, the Cougars’ lead was short-lived. The Utah State Aggies responded with a goal of their own, leveling the match and ultimately securing the shared result. The Aggies’ defense held firm for the remainder of the contest, neutralizing a BYU attack that was expected to score multiple goals according to Interstat’s game simulator, which had projected a 2-1 final score in favor of the home team. The same service’s ELO rating system had given BYU a 64.7 percent chance of victory.
The match was characterized by frequent lineup changes, with both coaching staffs utilizing their benches heavily throughout the 110 minutes of play. The first substitution came from Utah State in the ninth minute, and the rotations continued at a rapid pace, particularly around the halftime break, which saw a flurry of five changes for each team. The high volume of substitutions underscored the tactical battle and the physical demands of the rivalry game.
With the draw, BYU’s record in NCAA competition moves to 10 wins, six losses and four draws. Their overall record across all competitions is identical. Utah State’s NCAA record now stands at nine wins, three losses and six draws, which also mirrors their overall season tally.
The result continues a recent trend for both programs. For Utah State, the draw represents a positive step after a series of mixed results. Their previous match was a 2-2 draw on the road against Boise State on Nov. 8. Prior to that, they had secured a 1-0 home victory over New Mexico on Nov. 2. The Aggies have now lost only once in their last five outings.
BYU entered the contest on a stronger run of form, having gone unbeaten in their three previous games. This included a 1-0 road win at Kansas on Nov. 8 and a decisive 4-0 victory at Baylor on Nov. 5. Their last defeat was a 3-1 home loss to Kansas on Oct. 23.
The match served as a reversal of fortune from the teams’ last head-to-head meeting. On Sept. 6 of this season, BYU earned a 2-0 victory over Utah State in Provo. Friday’s 1-1 draw demonstrates the progression of the Aggies’ squad and their ability to compete with a formidable Cougar team on its home field, splitting the season series between the two rivals.
