NOTTINGHAM, England (Interstat) — Notts County opened its League Two season with a 3-1 victory over Newport County on Monday at Meadow Lane Stadium.

Defender Lucas Ness powered the home side with two first-half goals, scoring in the 19th and 23rd minutes. Substitute Harrison Biggins extended the lead in the 65th minute before Newport’s Jayden Luker netted a consolation goal in the 86th.

Biggins also recorded an assist in a performance that included a yellow card, one of five issued in the match. The result defied a pregame projection of a 1-1 draw, as Notts County improved to 1-0-0 while Newport fell to 0-1-0.
