Barnet vs Newport County
LONDON (Interstat) — Newport County overcame a halftime deficit and a favored opponent to secure a rare road victory, defeating Barnet 2-1 in a League Two match at The Hive Stadium on Saturday.
The result, which flipped the script on pregame projections, provided a vital boost for a Newport County side languishing near the bottom of the English fourth-tier table, while halting the momentum of a Barnet team with playoff aspirations.
Barnet’s forward Callum Stead opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, giving the home side an advantage that held until the break. Interstat’s pregame metrics heavily favored Barnet, projecting an 80.70% probability of a home victory and a final score of 1-1.
Newport County, however, found an equalizer in the 65th minute through Bobby Kamwa. The visitors then completed the comeback in the 83rd minute when James Crole netted the decisive goal. The match-winning sequence included an assist from substitute Thomas Davies, who entered the game in the second half. Davies was also shown a yellow card in the 59th minute, one of three in a physical second half that also saw cautions for Barnet’s Sven Sprangler (75th minute) and Ryan Glover (77th minute).
The victory marked a measure of revenge for Newport County, which played to a scoreless draw with Barnet in the reverse fixture on Dec. 26. It also snapped a two-game losing streak for Newport in league play, following a 2-1 home loss to Colchester United on March 7.
With the win, Newport County improved its League Two record to eight wins, 22 losses and seven draws this season. Their overall record across all competitions moved to nine wins, 23 losses and seven draws. Despite the victory, they remain in a difficult position in the league standings.
For Barnet, the defeat was a missed opportunity to solidify a place in the upper half of the table. They now hold a record of 14 wins, 12 losses and eight draws in League Two play, with an overall mark of 14 wins, 14 losses and nine draws. The loss halted a positive run of form that had seen them lose just once in their previous five league matches.
Newport County will look to build on the upset win quickly, as they host Bromley on Tuesday. Barnet, aiming to rebound, will travel to face Crawley Town on the same day.
