SALVADOR, Brazil (Interstat) — EC Vitoria opened its Carioca Série A campaign with a 2-0 victory over Mirassol FC on Saturday at Estádio Manoel Barradas, defying pregame projections. Defender Lucas Halter opened the scoring in the 25th minute and midfielder Matheusinho added a second-half goal. The result was an upset, as statistical models heavily favored Mirassol to win. Both substitutes Luiz Otavio and José Aldo, who recorded assists, received yellow cards in the second half. Vitoria begins the season 1-0-0, while Mirassol starts 0-1-0.
