Illinois-Chicago at Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Illinois-Chicago Flames defied pregame projections and a hostile road environment to secure a narrow 1-0 victory over the Belmont Bruins in an NCAA men’s soccer match on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2025.

The result, witnessed by an intimate crowd of 190 at E.S. Rose Park, saw the Flames execute a disciplined defensive game plan to stifle a Belmont side that was heavily favored to win. Statistical analysis firm Interstat had given the Bruins a 59.2 percent probability of victory and projected a 1-1 draw, but Illinois-Chicago’s resolute performance rendered those forecasts inaccurate.

The game’s lone goal, scored in the first half, proved sufficient for the Flames. The single tally improved Illinois-Chicago’s record within the NCAA competition to 7-1-3, solidifying their position as a formidable force this season. Belmont, meanwhile, saw its NCAA record fall to 5-3-1 with the defeat. The teams’ overall season records across all competitions mirror their NCAA marks.

The match was a tense, tactical affair marked by strategic substitutions from both benches, beginning in the 23rd minute. Belmont was forced into an early change when Lucas Wolthers was substituted out. Illinois-Chicago’s coach responded with his own adjustments, making four substitutions before halftime, including the removal of Sota Nakazono, Rui Reis, Daniel Zepeda and Luka Assaf. Belmont also made a first-half switch, pulling Paul Claes Nielsen in the 35th minute and Parker Forbes at halftime.

The second half saw Illinois-Chicago focus on preserving its slim lead, making two further changes in the latter stages by substituting out Sebastian Khoury and Edouard Nys to reinforce its defensive shape and manage the game clock. The Bruins, despite their favored status and home-field advantage, were unable to break down the Flames’ organized back line and find an equalizer.

Sunday’s contest served as a reversal of fortune from the teams’ previous meeting just under a month earlier. On Oct. 12, Illinois-Chicago also emerged victorious, but in a higher-scoring 2-1 affair on the same Belmont pitch. The Flames have now won both head-to-head matchups this season.

The victory extends a strong run of form for Illinois-Chicago. In their last outing on Oct. 18, they played to a 2-2 draw with Evansville. Their only loss of the NCAA campaign came in a wild 5-4 shootout against Marquette on Oct. 7. The team has otherwise been consistently difficult to beat, with key wins over Loyola Chicago, Wright State and an early-season triumph over Northwestern.

For Belmont, the loss halts the positive momentum they had built with a 2-1 win over Evansville this past Wednesday, Nov. 5. That victory had been a bounce-back performance following a 1-0 loss to Drake on Oct. 24. The Bruins have shown they can compete with strong opponents, evidenced by a scoreless draw with Louisville and a 2-0 victory over Memphis earlier in the year, but they were unable to solve the Illinois-Chicago puzzle on this occasion.

The 1-0 result underscores a season of defensive reliability for the Flames, who have now recorded clean sheets in four of their NCAA matches. For Belmont, the defeat represents a missed opportunity to improve their standing and will force a reassessment as they look to rebound in their final fixtures of the 2025 campaign.
