SÃO JOÃO DA VENDA, Portugal (Interstat) — Portugal’s under-19 women’s national team opened its UEFA Championship qualification campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Iceland on Saturday at Estádio Algarve.

Defender Cristina Fernandes scored twice, finding the net in the 69th minute and again in second-half stoppage time. Midfielder Carolina Tristão opened the scoring in the 44th minute. The result exceeded the pregame projection from Interstat, which heavily favored Portugal. The Portuguese side began its season with a win, while Iceland started with a loss.
