Spennymoor Town vs AFC Fylde
SPENNYMOOR, England (Interstat) — AFC Fylde advanced in the FA Trophy with a 3-2 victory over Spennymoor Town on Saturday in a match that defied pregame projections and featured a frantic first-half scoring burst.
The Builders’ Arena, the home ground for Spennymoor Town, was the site of the cup contest, which saw the visiting Coasters improve their record in the competition to one win and no losses. Spennymoor Town’s tournament record fell to no wins and one loss.
The result was unexpected according to pregame analytics. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 1-1 draw, and its ELO system gave the home side a 62.8 percent probability of victory.
The match’s narrative was largely written in a dizzying seven-minute span late in the first half. After a slow start, the game exploded into life in the 36th minute when AFC Fylde’s George Wilson opened the scoring.
Spennymoor Town responded quickly, with Junior Mondal leveling the score just five minutes later in the 41st minute. The home side’s parity was short-lived, however, as AFC Fylde’s Ethan Robson restored the visitors’ lead a mere two minutes later, sending the teams into halftime with the Coasters leading 2-1.
AFC Fylde emerged from the break with continued momentum and extended its lead in the 59th minute. Forward Jonathan Ustabaşı found the net for his first goal of the afternoon, pushing the score to 3-1.
Spennymoor Town refused to capitulate and mounted a comeback effort. Ustabaşı struck again for the visitors, but this time into his own net, scoring an own goal in the 72nd minute to bring the home team back within a single goal. Despite increased pressure from Spennymoor in the final 20 minutes, AFC Fylde’s defense held firm to secure the road victory.
The win extends a strong run of form for AFC Fylde across all competitions, where its record now stands at five wins, one loss and one draw. The team has now won four of its last five matches, including a 5-0 league victory over this same Spennymoor Town side just three weeks prior. Their only recent defeat was a 3-2 loss to Worksop Town on Oct. 11.
Spennymoor Town’s record across all competitions now evens at one win and one loss. The club had not played a competitive match in over two months, with its last outing being a 1-0 victory over West Auckland Town in a different competition on Sept. 13.
With the result, AFC Fylde progresses to the next round of the FA Trophy, a national knockout cup competition for clubs in the English football league system. Spennymoor Town is eliminated from the tournament.
