MALACATAN, Guatemala (Interstat) — Malacateco opened its Liga Nacional season with a 2-0 victory over Comunicaciones on Sunday, defying pregame projections. Ángel López broke a scoreless deadlock in the 57th minute at Estadio Municipal Santa Lucía. Kevin Ramírez added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute to secure the win for the home side. The result was an upset, as statistical models heavily favored Malacateco to win but projected a higher-scoring affair. Comunicaciones, one of Guatemala’s most prominent clubs, begins its campaign with a loss. The match was the season opener for both clubs in Guatemala’s top-flight division.
