Machida Zelvia vs FC Tōkyō

TOKYO (Interstat) — A Tokyo derby with high stakes is set for Saturday as Machida Zelvia hosts FC Tōkyō in the Emperor Cup. Both clubs enter the knockout match with perfect, albeit abbreviated, records in Japan’s premier domestic cup competition.

Machida Zelvia, the home side, has been dominant this season across all competitions, posting a record of 32 wins, 13 losses and 10 draws. They are a perfect 8-0 in this year’s Emperor Cup. FC Tōkyō, the visitor, holds a 4-0 record within the tournament, though its overall season form is less consistent at 17-13-9.

The matchup is a quick rematch of a contest from just six days prior, on Nov. 9, where FC Tōkyō secured a 1-0 away victory over Zelvia. The teams have split their two meetings this calendar year, with each winning 1-0 on the other’s home pitch back in February.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, Saturday’s contest is projected to end in a 1-1 draw, which would force extra time or penalties to decide which club advances.

The winner will move on in the Emperor Cup, while both teams will return to J1 League play on Nov. 30. FC Tōkyō will travel to face Vissel Kobe, while Machida Zelvia will host Nagoya Grampus.
