Lazio W vs Napoli W

ROME (Interstat) — Martina Piemonte scored deep into second-half stoppage time to lift Lazio Women to a dramatic 1-0 victory over Napoli Women in a Serie A Women match on Sunday.

The match, played at a rain-slicked Centro Sportivo di Formello - Campo Mirko Fersini, appeared destined for a scoreless draw until Piemonte broke through in the fourth minute of added time. The late winner came against the run of the final minutes, where Napoli had pushed forward in search of a winning goal of its own.

The decisive play was a product of Lazio’s substitutes. Bianca Vergani, who had entered the match in the second half, collected the ball and delivered a crucial assist on the game’s only goal. The play was also credited with an assist to midfielder Antonietta Castiello, though the official statistics listed a second assist from another substitute, Mali Trøan.

The goal was Piemonte’s first of the Serie A Women campaign and capped a hard-fought, physical contest between the two sides. The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 1-1 draw and whose ELO rating system gave Lazio a 91.90 percent probability of victory.

The victory extends Lazio’s unbeaten run in the league and solidifies its position near the top of the table. Lazio now holds a record of three wins, one loss and one draw in Serie A Women play this season. Across all competitions, the club is three wins, one loss and one draw.

For Napoli, the heartbreaking loss halts the momentum the team had built with a four-match unbeaten streak in all competitions. Napoli’s record in the league now stands at two wins, two losses and one draw. Their overall record across all competitions moves to three wins, two losses and one draw.

The match was a chippy affair, reflected in the three yellow cards issued by the officiating crew. Napoli’s Trøan was booked in the 29th minute, while Lazio’s two key contributors in the final goal, Vergani and Castiello, also received cautions in the 57th and 77th minutes, respectively.

Lazio will look to carry the positive momentum from this last-gasp win into its next Serie A Women fixture, a home match against FC Internazionale Milano on Sunday, Nov. 23.

Napoli, meanwhile, must regroup quickly from the disappointing finish as it prepares to host FC Internazionale Milano in its next league contest on Sunday, Nov. 16, followed by a trip to face Genoa CFC Women on Saturday, Nov. 22.
