Melbourne City vs Adelaide Utd
AP Sports Preview
MELBOURNE, Australia (Interstat) — Adelaide United aims to extend its recent dominance over Melbourne City when the teams meet Sunday in an A-League clash at AAMI Park.
Adelaide (13-7-5) enters on a three-match unbeaten run, including a 3-1 victory over Macarthur on April 19. The Reds have been difficult to beat all season, with only two losses in their past 11 outings. Their attack has been potent, scoring four goals in wins over Western Sydney Wanderers and Perth Glory in recent weeks. Striker Hiroshi Ibusuki has led the line effectively, while captain Ryan Kitto provides creativity from midfield.
Melbourne City (10-6-9) is coming off a 3-2 win at Brisbane Roar on April 18, snapping a two-match losing streak. City has been inconsistent, alternating wins and losses over the past month. Defensive lapses have plagued the side, particularly in a 6-2 defeat to Macarthur in January and a 3-0 loss to Auckland FC in February. However, the return of striker Jamie Maclaren from injury has given the attack a boost; he scored twice against Brisbane.
The head-to-head record heavily favors Adelaide. In their most recent meeting Nov. 21, 2025, Adelaide routed Melbourne City 4-1 at home. That result extended Adelaide’s unbeaten streak against City to four matches. Melbourne City’s last win in the series came in October 2024.
Adelaide has thrived on the road this season, with a 6-3-3 away record. Melbourne City is 6-3-3 at home, but the crowd at AAMI Park has seen its team drop points in four of the past seven home matches.
Injuries could play a role. Melbourne City will be without midfielder Tolgay Arslan (hamstring), while defender Samuel Souprayen is questionable with a calf issue. Adelaide has a fully fit squad.
The Interstat game simulator projects a 2-1 victory for Adelaide United, a result that would further solidify their position near the top of the A-League table.
Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. local time. The match will be broadcast on Paramount+.
