NEWCASTLE, NSW (Interstat) — Newcastle Jets defeated Macarthur 1-0 in an A-League match Sunday at McDonald Jones Stadium. The lone goal came in the 54th minute from midfielder Lachlan Bayliss, assisted by Max Burgess.

The result improved the Jets’ league record to 12 wins, six losses and three draws, solidifying their strong standing. Macarthur, which saw Burgess and substitute Anthony Caceres receive yellow cards before the goal, fell to an even 6-6-6 record in league play. The match was a defensive reversal from the teams’ last meeting, a 5-4 Macarthur victory on Dec. 26.

The Jets’ win defied a pre-game projection from Interstat’s simulator, which had favored Macarthur, though an alternate ELO model heavily favored Newcastle.
