MELBOURNE, Australia (Interstat) — Nikolaos Vergos scored twice to lead Melbourne Victory to a 2-1 win over Adelaide United in the A-League season opener for both clubs Saturday at AAMI Park.

Vergos struck in the 24th and 46th minutes, giving the hosts a commanding lead. Adelaide’s Dylan Pierias pulled one back in the 86th minute, but the comeback fell short. Vergos also received a yellow card shortly after his second goal.

The result matched the projection from Interstat’s game simulator. Melbourne Victory begins its campaign with a win, while Adelaide United starts with a loss.
