Kilmarnock vs Falkirk FC
KILMARNOCK, Scotland (Interstat) — Substitute Brian Graham’s second-half goal lifted Falkirk FC to a 1-0 victory over Kilmarnock in a Scottish Premiership match on Saturday at a rain-swept BBSP Stadium, Rugby Park.
The result, decided by a single moment of quality in the 54th minute, provided a vital away win for Falkirk and extended a dismal league run for the struggling home side.
Falkirk, which entered the match having lost its last two league fixtures without scoring, improved its Premiership record to six wins, six losses and five draws. Kilmarnock, which has now won just once in 15 league outings this season, fell to one win, 10 losses and four draws.
The match defied pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had forecast a high-scoring 3-2 victory for Falkirk, while its ELO rating system gave Kilmarnock a 74.30 percent probability to win. Instead, a tight, often fractious contest was settled by a single goal.
After a first half of few clear chances, the decisive play began with Falkirk defender Lewis Mayo. His long, diagonal pass from the back found fellow substitute Henry Cartwright on the left flank. Cartwright, who had been shown a yellow card in the 36th minute, drove forward before sliding a precise low cross into the Kilmarnock penalty area. The ball was deftly flicked on by midfielder Liam Polworth, setting it perfectly for the arriving Graham, who finished first-time from close range.
The goal was Graham’s first of the Premiership campaign and came just three minutes after he entered the match. Polworth and Mayo were each credited with an assist on the play.
Kilmarnock struggled to mount a consistent response. The home side, which has scored a league-low 11 goals this season, managed only a handful of half-chances as Falkirk’s defense, organized by Mayo, held firm. The visitors nearly doubled their lead late, but the one-goal margin proved sufficient.
Discipline frayed as the match progressed. Following Cartwright’s earlier booking, Polworth received a yellow card in the 61st minute for a foul as Kilmarnock attempted to build momentum after conceding. In the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time, goal contributor Mayo was also cautioned for time-wasting as Falkirk saw out the final moments.
The victory completes a league double for Falkirk over Kilmarnock this season, following a 3-1 win at Falkirk Stadium on Nov. 1. It also marks a positive restart for Falkirk after consecutive shutout losses to Hibernian and Heart of Midlothian.
For Kilmarnock, the defeat adds to a season of profound struggle. The Ayrshire club has now taken just seven points from a possible 45 in Premiership play and has failed to score in nine of its 15 league matches. The pressure will intensify as the team seeks a path out of the relegation zone.
Falkirk will look to build on this result when it travels to face Dundee on Dec. 27 in its final match of 2025. Kilmarnock, seeking a desperately needed turnaround, will make the short trip to Paisley to play St. Mirren on the same date.
