Cercle Brugge vs Mechelen
BRUGGE, Belgium (Interstat) — In a match that defied pregame projections, visiting Mechelen emerged with a 3-2 victory over Cercle Brugge in a Belgian First Division A contest Saturday at Jan Breydelstadion. The result, fueled by a rapid-fire exchange of four goals in a dizzying 14-minute span just before halftime, saw Mechelen improve its league record to seven wins, six draws and three losses. Cercle Brugge’s difficult season continued, falling to two wins, three draws and nine losses.
The game’s narrative was largely written in a chaotic close to the first half. After a quiet opening half-hour, the match exploded into life. Mechelen’s Fredrik Hammar, entering the game as a substitute, broke the deadlock in the 35th minute. His teammate, fellow substitute Lion Lauberbach, doubled the advantage just four minutes later in the 39th, stunning the home crowd and appearing to put the visitors in firm control.
Cercle Brugge responded with urgency. Defender Flávio Nazinho pulled a goal back for the home side in the 47th minute, offering a lifeline. That hope was extinguished almost immediately, however, as Mechelen restored its two-goal cushion. Just two minutes after Nazinho’s strike, in the 49th minute, another Mechelen substitute, Gora Diouf, found the net to make it 3-1.
The second half saw Cercle Brugge push forward in an attempt to salvage the match. Their persistence was rewarded with a consolation goal from midfielder Gary Magnée in the 89th minute, assisted by Tommy St. Jago, but it proved too little, too late. Mechelen managed the final moments to secure all three points.
The outcome was a statistical surprise. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 1-1 draw, and its ELO rating system gave Cercle Brugge a 56.9 percent probability of winning the match. Mechelen’s performance, particularly the impact from its bench, overturned those expectations.
The match was not without disciplinary notes. Cercle Brugge’ Ian Struyf received a yellow card in the 28th minute. Later, Mechelen’s Christiaan Ravych was booked in the 83rd minute, followed by a yellow for his teammate Tommy St. Jago in the 89th.
The victory extends Mechelen’s positive recent form in the league, having now won three of its last four matches. This result also avenged a 0-0 draw between the two sides in their previous meeting on Sept. 21. For Cercle Brugge, the loss marks another setback in a season of struggle, having secured only one point from its last five league fixtures.
Mechelen will look to build on this momentum when it travels to face Sint-Truiden on Dec. 21. Cercle Brugge, seeking a path to recovery, will visit Sporting Oud-Heverlee on the same day.
