Real Madrid Women Upset Wolfsburg in Champions League Opener Behind Méndez, Caicedo Goals
MADRID (Interstat) — Real Madrid CF Femenino opened its UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign with a 2-0 upset of favored VfL Wolfsburg on Tuesday at Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano.
Defender María Méndez headed in a 19th-minute corner to give the hosts an early lead. Forward Linda Caicedo sealed the Group Stage victory in the 67th minute, finishing a counter-attack. Both assists came from substitutes Caitlin Dijkstra and Ella Inez Peddemors.
The match was marred by discipline issues. Wolfsburg’s Maëlle Lakrar received a second yellow card just before halftime, forcing the German side to play a woman down. Real Madrid’s Iris Ashley Santiago was sent off in the final minute. The result defied pre-match projections that heavily favored Wolfsburg.
