PORTO, Portugal (Interstat) — Portugal delivered a stunning offensive performance Sunday, thrashing Armenia 9-1 in a World Cup qualifying match at Estádio do Dragão.

Midfielders Bruno Fernandes and João Neves each recorded a hat trick to power the Portuguese attack. Renato Veiga, Gonçalo Ramos and Francisco Conceição also scored for the home side. Eduard Spertsyan scored Armenia’s lone goal in the 18th minute. The lopsided result far exceeded statistical projections for the match. Portugal begins its qualifying campaign with a victory, while Armenia starts with a loss.
