Saarbrucken vs Alemannia Aachen
SAARBRÜCKEN, Germany (Interstat) — In a match defined by a pivotal red card and a late equalizer, hosts Saarbrücken and Alemannia Aachen played to a 1-1 draw in German 3. Liga action Wednesday at Ludwigsparkstadion.
The result, which defied pregame projections that heavily favored Saarbrücken, leaves both teams with identical point totals in the league standings from their mirrored records. Aachen now sits at 14 wins, 11 losses and six draws, while Saarbrücken holds a record of seven wins, 11 losses and 10 draws.
The visitors from Aachen struck first against the run of play in the 24th minute. Substitute Jonas Oehmichen, who had entered the match early, found the net to give his team the lead. The assist was credited to defender Joel Bichsel.
The game’s complexion changed drastically just before halftime. Aachen forward Kaan Caliskaner, who had received a yellow card in the 47th minute, was sent off with a red card just four minutes later in the 51st, forcing his team to play a man down for nearly the entire second half.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Aachen’s defense held firm against a Saarbrücken side that had been given a 62.3% probability to win by statistical models. The home team, however, finally broke through in the 81st minute. Forward Florian Pick scored the equalizer, assisted by midfielder Sebastian Vasiliadis, to salvage a point for Saarbrücken.
The match was a physical affair, with four yellow cards issued in addition to the decisive red. Saarbrücken’s Pierre Nadjombe was booked in the 22nd minute, followed by Aachen’s Bichsel in the 40th and Caliskaner in the 47th. Vasiliadis also received a yellow for Saarbrücken in the 86th minute.
The draw extends Aachen’s recent strong form in the league, having lost only once in their last seven matches. Their previous outing was a 3-0 victory over Wehen Wiesbaden on April 5. For Saarbrücken, the result follows a 1-0 win over Ingolstadt II on the same date, but continues a pattern of inconsistent results in 3. Liga play.
This match was a reversal of the teams’ previous meeting this season on Nov. 2, 2025, when Aachen secured a 2-0 victory at home.
Aachen will look to maintain its position near the top of the table when it hosts Stuttgart on Saturday. Saarbrücken, seeking to climb from the lower half of the standings, will travel to face Havelse, also on Saturday.
