MANAGUA, Nicaragua (Interstat) — Nicaragua opened its World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over Honduras on Thursday, delivering a surprise result at Estadio Nacional de Fútbol. Bancy Hernández scored the opener in the 12th minute, and Jaime Moreno sealed the win with a goal in the 82nd. Both Honduran substitutes, Marlon Ramírez and Getsel Montes, received yellow cards after entering the match. The outcome defied pregame projections that heavily favored Honduras to win.
