Lille Edges Marseille in Tight Ligue 1 Season Opener
VILLENEUVE-D’ASCO, France (Interstat) — Lille opened its Ligue 1 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Marseille on Friday at Decathlon Arena - Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
The match’s lone goal came in the 10th minute from midfielder Ethan Mbappé, assisted by goalkeeper Berke Özer. Substitute Arthur Vermeeren later recorded a secondary assist on the play. Özer and Vermeeren each received yellow cards late in the contest.
The result defied a pregame projection from Interstat, which had simulated a 1-1 draw and gave Lille only a slight 52.7% probability to win. With the victory, Lille starts the French league season 1-0, while Marseille begins 0-1.
