FC Machida Zelvia Upsets Cheng Rongcheng 3‑2 in AFC Champions League Thriller
TOKYO (Interstat) — FC Machida Zelvia opened its AFC Champions League campaign with a 3-2 upset victory over favored Cheng Rongcheng on Tuesday at Machida GION Stadium.
The home side defied a pregame projection that gave the visitors nearly an 80% chance to win. Forward Tete Yengi led Machida with two headed goals, including the decisive strike in the 55th minute. Midfielder Ryōhei Shirasaki added a first-half goal.
Cheng Rongcheng’s Wei Shihao scored as a substitute to level the match 2-2 before halftime, but Machida substitute Felipe Sousa sealed the win with a 90th-minute header. The result leaves Machida with a perfect record to start its season across all competitions.
