BAGHDAD (Interstat) — Host Al Shorta SC delivered a major upset Monday, defeating favored Al Duhail 3-2 in an AFC Champions League match at Al Zawra’a Stadium. The result defied a pregame projection that gave Al Duhail an 80% chance to win.

Al Duhail’s Krzysztof Piatek opened the scoring in the 10th minute, but Al Shorta SC responded quickly. Bassam Shakir equalized in the 19th minute before forward Bouly Sambou scored twice in quick succession after halftime, in the 57th and 58th minutes, to seal the victory. Benjamin Bourigeaud added a late goal for the visitors.

The win gives Al Shorta SC a winning start in the continental competition, while Al Duhail begins its campaign with a loss.
