Liverpool Stuns Marseille With 3‑0 Champions League Road Win as Heavy Underdog

MARSEILLE, France (Interstat) — Liverpool delivered a dominant away performance Wednesday, defeating Marseille 3-0 at Orange Vélodrome in a Champions League group stage match that defied statistical projections.

The visitors, given just over a 20 percent chance to win by one analytics system, controlled the match. Substitute Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time. Marseille goalkeeper Géronimo Rulli scored an own goal in the 72nd minute, and substitute Cody Gakpo added a final goal in second-half stoppage time. Defender Benjamin Pavard assisted on Gakpo’s goal but also received a yellow card.

The result gave Liverpool a winning start to its European campaign, while Marseille began with a home defeat. The match was played Jan. 21, 2026.
