Newcastle, Leverkusen Draw in High-Energy Champions League Opener

LEVERKUSEN, Germany (Dec. 10, 2025) (Interstat) — Bayer Leverkusen and Newcastle United played to a 2-2 draw in their Champions League group stage opener Wednesday at BayArena.

Newcastle substitute Bruno Guimarães opened the scoring in the 13th minute. Leverkusen defender Alejandro Grimaldo equalized in the 88th minute, canceling out a 74th-minute goal from Newcastle’s Lewis Miley, another substitute. Both of Newcastle’s goals were assisted by substitutes Malick Thiaw and Aaron Ramsdale, while Leverkusen midfielder Aleix García assisted on Grimaldo’s leveler.

The match featured four yellow cards. The result defied pre-match projections that heavily favored a Leverkusen victory. Both clubs opened their European campaigns with a draw.
