PRESTON, England (Interstat) — A berth in the Championship promotion playoffs could be on the line Saturday when Preston North End hosts Southampton at Deepdale.

The May 2 matchup carries significant weight in the second-tier English league table. Both sides enter the final stretch of the season jockeying for position, and the result could determine who advances to the lucrative promotion tournament.

Southampton holds the recent edge in the series. The Saints have not lost in their last 10 league matches, a run that began with a 5-1 thrashing of Wrexham on April 7. The streak includes a 2-2 draw at Ipswich Town on Tuesday, which followed a narrow 2-1 defeat to Premier League side Manchester City in the League Cup on April 25. Overall, Southampton has posted seven wins and two draws in league play since mid-March, outscoring opponents 20-9 in that span. Manager Russell Martin has deployed a high-pressing attack that has yielded three goals in three separate matches, including a 3-0 win at Blackburn Rovers on April 14.

Preston North End, meanwhile, has been less consistent. The Lilywhites secured a gritty 3-2 victory at Sheffield United on April 25, snapping a two-match losing streak. That win followed a 2-1 loss at Birmingham City and a 2-0 home defeat to West Bromwich Albion. Preston’s form at Deepdale has been mixed, with the club losing three of its last five home fixtures, including a 3-0 defeat to Coventry City on March 11. Manager Ryan Lowe’s side has struggled to find offensive rhythm, managing just two goals in its previous three matches before the Sheffield United outburst.

The last meeting between these clubs came Nov. 1, 2025, when Preston North End posted a 2-0 victory at Southampton. That result snapped a three-match winless streak for Preston against the Saints.

Saturday’s fixture could come down to a tight, defensive battle. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 1-1 draw, a result that would keep both teams in contention but leave neither fully in control of its playoff destiny. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. local time.
