Southampton Routs Charlton Athletic in Dominant Road Victory
LONDON (Interstat) — Southampton delivered a stunning offensive display, routing Charlton Athletic 5-1 on Saturday in a Championship match at The Valley.
The visitors scored five unanswered goals in a blistering first-half performance. Ryan Manning opened the scoring in the 14th minute, followed quickly by Adam Armstrong and Caspar Jander. Substitute Finn Azaz then scored twice before Lloyd Jones added a fifth just before halftime. Charlton’s lone goal came from Tyreece Campbell in second-half stoppage time.
The lopsided result defied a pregame projection of a draw, handing Southampton a winning start to its league campaign while Charlton begins with a loss.
