Gateshead vs Morecambe
GATESHEAD, England (Interstat) — In a wild, back-and-forth contest that defied pregame projections, Morecambe and Gateshead played to a 4-4 draw in a National League match Wednesday at Gateshead International Stadium.
The result, a stark departure from the statistical expectation of a Gateshead victory, saw the visiting Morecambe fight back from an early deficit to take a commanding lead, only for the hosts to mount a stunning late comeback to salvage a point.
The match exploded into life almost immediately. Gateshead’s Keaton Ward silenced any early nerves for the home supporters, putting his side ahead just three minutes after kickoff. The lead was short-lived, however, as Morecambe’s Christopher Popov announced his arrival with an equalizer in the 17th minute. Popov then turned provider nine minutes later, setting up teammate Jack Nolan to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage.
Popov was not finished. The forward completed his first-half brace in the 44th minute, sending Morecambe into the break with a surprising 3-1 lead. He completed a spectacular hat trick just eight minutes after the restart in the 53rd minute, seemingly putting the game out of reach at 4-1.
The match grew increasingly tense, reflected in a flurry of yellow cards. Gateshead’s Paul Lewis was booked in the 51st minute, followed by Morecambe’s Kyle Jameson in the 56th and Brad Nicholson in the 64th.
Trailing by three goals, Gateshead began its improbable fightback. Billy Chadwick provided a lifeline in the 73rd minute, cutting the deficit to 4-2 and reigniting the home crowd. The pressure mounted on the Morecambe defense as Gateshead pushed forward in search of more goals.
The dramatic equalizer came deep into second-half stoppage time. In the 92nd minute, Miguel Azeez found the net for Gateshead, completing the remarkable comeback and sparking frenzied celebrations among the home faithful. Azeez was subsequently shown a yellow card amid the chaotic scenes following the goal.
The eight-goal thriller stands in stark contrast to the teams’ previous meeting this season on Sept. 30, 2025, when Gateshead secured a 5-2 victory at Morecambe. Pre-match analytics heavily favored another Gateshead win, with Interstat’s game simulator projecting a 2-1 victory for the hosts and its ELO system giving Gateshead a 64.1% probability of winning.
The draw does little to improve the league standing for either struggling side. Morecambe’s record in the National League now sits at 5 wins, 19 losses and 9 draws, while Gateshead moves to 7 wins, 19 losses and 7 draws. Across all competitions this season, Morecambe is 5-21-9 and Gateshead is 7-20-7.
Morecambe will look to build on the point when it hosts York City on Saturday. Gateshead continues its campaign at home against Forest Green Rovers, also on Saturday.
