Portadown vs Crusaders
PORTADOWN, Northern Ireland (Interstat) — Portadown will host rival Crusaders in a Premiership match on Saturday looking to extend its recent dominance in the fixture, while the visitors aim to halt a severe slump in form.
The match at Shamrock Park is a crucial encounter for both sides in the NIFL Premiership, with Portadown seeking a third consecutive victory over its Belfast-based opponent.
Recent history heavily favors the home side. Portadown secured a stunning 4-0 away win at Seaview on Dec. 6 and edged Crusaders 2-1 at home last Aug. 29. Another victory would complete a convincing season sweep.
Crusaders, however, arrive in dire straits. The team is mired in a disastrous run, having lost its last four matches while being outscored 11-0. That includes a 3-0 home defeat to Glenavon last Saturday and a 1-0 loss to Cliftonville on March 10. Their form since late January shows just one win in 10 league outings, a period featuring heavy defeats including 5-1 to Glentoran and back-to-back 5-0 and 4-0 losses to Coleraine.
Portadown’s form is also inconsistent, but it has shown more resilience. After a 3-1 loss at Linfield on March 10, it managed a 1-1 draw at Ballymena United on March 7. Its last victory was a 2-1 home win over Larne on Feb. 14.
Despite the stark contrast in recent head-to-head results, Interstat’s game simulator projects a narrow 2-1 away win for Crusaders, suggesting a potential turning point in their fortunes.
For Crusaders, this league match is one of few remaining before a significant summer challenge. The club is scheduled to host Swiss side Basel in the first leg of a UEFA Europa Conference League qualification playoff on May 10, a major fixture that will require a rapid improvement in performance.
Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. local time at Shamrock Park on Saturday.
