DR Congo Edges Benin in Tight Africa Cup of Nations Group Match
RABAT, Morocco (Interstat) — Theo Bongonda’s early goal proved decisive as DR Congo opened its Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 1-0 victory over Benin on Tuesday at Al Medina Stadium.
Bongonda scored in the 16th minute, converting from the left side for the match’s lone score. The home side managed to protect the narrow lead despite a physical contest that produced six yellow cards. Benin was unable to generate an equalizer.
The result gives DR Congo a winning start in the tournament, while Benin begins with a loss. DR Congo’s next match is Saturday against Senegal. The match defied the pregame projection from Interstat, which had simulated a 2-1 win for DR Congo and gave the side a 74% probability to win.
