RIO DE JANEIRO (Interstat) — Defender Samuel Xavier scored in the 61st minute to lift Fluminense to a 1-0 victory over Internacional on Saturday at Estadio Jornalista Mário Filho. The result was an upset, as Internacional was projected by statistical models to have a 75 percent chance of winning. Xavier’s game-winner was assisted by substitutes Juninho and Alan Patrick, who both entered the match in the second half. The match was the season opener for both clubs in the Carioca Série A competition, leaving each with a 0-0 record.
