RIO DE JANEIRO (Interstat) — Vasco da Gama opened its Carioca Série A campaign with a 2-0 victory over rival Fluminense on Monday at Estadio Jornalista Mário Filho. Rayan Vitor broke the scoreless deadlock in the 38th minute, and Nuno Gonçalo Moreira doubled the lead in the 52nd minute. Moreira also received a yellow card in the 41st minute. The result defied a Interstat projection that had forecast a 2-2 draw, though its ELO system gave Vasco da Gama a 70.6% chance to win. Both clubs were playing their first match of the season in the Brazilian state competition.
