Plymouth Argyle Topples AFC Wimbledon in Season Opener
LONDON (Interstat) — Plymouth Argyle opened its League One campaign with a 3-1 victory over AFC Wimbledon on Saturday at Cherry Red Records Stadium.
Alex Mitchell put the visitors ahead in the sixth minute. Alistair Smith equalized for Wimbledon early in the second half, but Plymouth regained control with two goals in eight minutes. Substitute Lorent Tolaj scored the winner in the 68th and assisted Aribim Pepple’s 76th-minute insurance goal.
Tolaj’s goal and assist led Plymouth, which defied a pregame projection of a draw from Interstat. The firm’s analytics gave Argyle a 67.8% win probability.
The match featured eight yellow cards, with four issued in a contentious first half. Plymouth begins the season 1-0, while Wimbledon starts 0-1.
