WIGAN, England (Interstat) — Wigan Athletic opened its League One season with a 2-1 victory over Mansfield Town on Saturday at The Brick Community Stadium.

The hosts struck twice in a three-minute span in the first half. Callum Wright opened the scoring in the 25th minute, assisted by Joseph Taylor. Taylor then turned scorer, netting in the 28th minute with an assist from Jensen Weir. Lucas Akins pulled one back for Mansfield as a substitute, but the visitors could not find an equalizer.

The result gave Wigan a winning start, while Mansfield began its campaign with a loss. The match featured three yellow cards, issued to Taylor, Ryan Sweeney and Weir.
