WIGAN, England (Interstat) — Wigan Athletic opened its League One season with a commanding 3-0 victory over Rotherham United on Tuesday at The Brick Community Stadium, defying a pregame projection of a draw.

Defender Jason Kerr opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Forward Joseph Taylor doubled the lead in the 52nd before Callum Wright sealed the win in the 63rd. Will Aimson, Jamal Baptiste and Brandon Cover each provided an assist.

The result gives Wigan a winning start to the campaign, while Rotherham begins with a loss. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 1-1 draw, though its system gave Wigan a 78% probability to win. Four yellow cards were issued in the match.
