BRIGHTON, England (Interstat) — Manchester United opened the Premier League season with a 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove on Sunday at the American Express Stadium.

Patrick Dorgu put the visitors ahead in the 33rd minute. Bryan Mbeumo doubled the lead in the 44th minute, and Bruno Fernandes added a third goal in the 48th minute. Kobbie Mainoo assisted on Fernandes’ goal in the 45th-plus-3 minute and received a yellow card on the same play.

Manchester United improved to 1-0 in league play and across all competitions. Brighton fell to 0-1 in all competitions.

The match was the first of the new campaign for both sides. Brighton, playing at home, could not generate an equalizer after falling behind early. Manchester United’s defense held firm, keeping a clean sheet.

The result gave Manchester United an early edge in the standings as the Premier League season got underway.
