Shrewsbury Town Upsets Oldham Athletic in League Two Opener
SHREWSBURY, England (Interstat) — Shrewsbury Town opened its League Two season with a 1-0 victory over favored Oldham Athletic on Saturday at The Croud Meadow.
Defender William Boyle scored the game’s only goal in the 30th minute. The strike was assisted by a sequence of substitute play, with Joe Garner and Fabio Jalo each credited with an assist on the buildup.
The result defied pre-match projections. Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a 1-1 draw, and its ELO system gave Oldham Athletic a 66.9 percent probability to win.
The match grew chippy in the second half, with four yellow cards issued, including one to Shrewsbury’s Iwan Morgan. With the win, Shrewsbury Town begins the campaign 1-0-0, while Oldham Athletic starts 0-1-0.
