NEWPORT, Wales (Interstat) — Newport County opened its English League Two season with a 2-1 comeback victory over Harrogate Town on Saturday at Rodney Parade.

Harrogate’s Nathan Opoku scored in the eighth minute, but Newport responded before halftime. Substitute Jack Evans equalized in the 39th minute and then assisted Joe Thomas for the 57th-minute winner. Evans also received a yellow card six minutes after his goal.

The result defied a pregame projection from Interstat, which simulated a 1-1 draw and gave Newport a 70% probability to win. The victory gives Newport a winning start in league play, while Harrogate begins with a loss.
