Preview: Messina Hosts Sancataldese in Serie D Clash

MESSINA, Italy (Interstat) — Two sides seeking momentum will meet Sunday when Messina hosts Sancataldese in a Serie D fixture at the Stadio San Filippo.

The match, scheduled for Jan. 11, 2026, is a rematch of a September encounter won decisively by Messina, 3-1, on the road. That head-to-head result offers the home side a psychological edge, but recent form tells a more complex story.

Messina (6-5-5) enters off a demoralizing 4-0 road defeat to league power Palermo on Jan. 4. Prior to that, the club had shown defensive solidity, recording three clean sheets in a five-match unbeaten streak (2-3-0) through mid-December. Their home form, however, has been inconsistent, with just two wins in their last six matches at the San Filippo.

Sancataldese (3-7-6) is in a more urgent search for points, sitting lower in the table and winless in its last four outings (0-2-2). Its most recent match was a 3-0 home loss to Igea Virtus on Jan. 4. The team has struggled for goals, failing to score in five of its last ten matches. A porous defense has compounded issues, conceding multiple goals in three of the last four.

The statistical service Interstat projects a 1-1 draw, a result that would extend Sancataldese’s unbeaten streak on the road to three matches but would likely satisfy neither side’s ambitions.

For Messina, the focus will be on rediscovering the defensive resilience that fueled its mid-season run and converting home advantage into three critical points. Key attackers will look to exploit a Sancataldese back line that has kept only one clean sheet since early November.

Sancataldese’s challenge is twofold: shore up a defense that has conceded eight goals in its last four matches and find a reliable scoring threat. Managerial adjustments are likely after the comprehensive loss to Igea Virtus.

The fixture precedes a difficult stretch for both clubs. Messina faces a trip to Gela Calcio next, while Sancataldese must prepare to host Palermo. The result Sunday could set a pivotal tone for their winter campaigns.

Kickoff is set for 2:45 p.m. local time (1345 GMT).
