Angola vs Zimbabwe

LUANDA, Angola (Interstat) — Angola and Zimbabwe will meet Friday in a pivotal Africa Cup of Nations group stage match, with both sides seeking their first points of the tournament after opening-day defeats.

The Group D clash is scheduled for Dec. 26 at Estádio 11 de Novembro. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. local time.

Each nation enters the match looking to rebound from narrow 2-1 road losses this past Monday. Angola fell to South Africa, while Zimbabwe was defeated by Egypt. Those results have increased the pressure for a positive outcome in this second group fixture.

The Interstat game simulator projects a high-scoring draw, with a final score of Angola 2, Zimbabwe 2.

Angola, as the host nation, will rely on home support to spark its campaign. Coach Pedro Gonçalves emphasized the need for defensive improvement after conceding twice late against South Africa.

“We showed good attacking ideas, but we must be solid for the full 90 minutes,” Gonçalves said. “The focus is now entirely on Zimbabwe.”

Zimbabwe, known as the Warriors, will aim to capitalize on counter-attacks led by captain and forward Knowledge Musona. Manager Baltemar Brito acknowledged the challenge but pointed to his team’s competitive performance against Egypt as a foundation.

“We played well in phases against a strong side,” Brito said. “The task is to repeat those moments and be more clinical. Angola is strong at home, but we are prepared.”

The fixture carries significant weight in the group standings, with a loss potentially jeopardizing either team’s knockout stage hopes. The quick tournament turnaround means both squads are managing player fitness.

Following Friday’s match, both teams face quick turnarounds for their final group games on Monday, Dec. 29. Angola will host Egypt, while Zimbabwe will welcome South Africa.

Friday’s referee will be Jean-Jacques Ndala from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
