AP Sports Preview
CARNOUX-EN-PROVENCE, France (Interstat) — Carnoux Football will host Riviera FC on Saturday, May 9, in a National 3 matchup that carries implications for both sides near the bottom of the Group A table.
The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. local time at Stade Marcel Cerdan.
Carnoux enters the match on a four-match losing streak and has won only twice in its last 14 outings. The home side fell 3-2 at Seyssinet-Pariset on April 25, its most recent result, after conceding two second-half goals. Carnoux has been outscored 19-4 in its last five matches, including an 8-0 home defeat to Olympique Ales-en-Cevennes on March 28 and a 6-0 loss at Lyon La Duchere on April 11.
Riviera FC, based in Saint-Raphaël, arrives with slightly better form. The visitors defeated Stade Beaucairois 2-1 on April 26, ending a three-match winless run. Riviera has recorded four wins, four draws and three losses in its last 11 matches. The team has been competitive on the road, with three draws and two losses away from home this season.
The two sides met most recently on Jan. 17, when Riviera FC defeated Carnoux 4-1 at home. That result extended Riviera’s dominance in the head-to-head series, though the teams have not met in Carnoux this season.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is a 1-1 draw.
Carnoux Football’s season has been marked by defensive struggles. The team has conceded 32 goals in its last 10 matches, including a 6-1 loss at Marseille U19 on Feb. 13 and an 8-0 home defeat to Olympique Ales. Their only wins came against ASPTT Dijon (3-2 on Feb. 21) and ESC Rocheville (1-1 draw, but a win on penalties? No, draw). Actually, Carnoux’s last win was that 3-2 home victory over ASPTT Dijon. Since then, they have lost six and drawn two.
Riviera FC has been more balanced. The visitors have scored in eight of their last 10 matches, with standout performances including a 3-3 draw at ESC Rocheville on April 18 and a 2-1 win over Marseille U19 on March 29. However, they have also suffered heavy defeats, including a 4-1 loss at Olympique Ales on Feb. 21 and a 2-0 loss at Montpellier U19 on Feb. 15.
Both teams will face quick turnarounds after Saturday. Riviera FC will host ASPTT Dijon on May 16, while Carnoux Football travels to Gallia Lucciana on the same date.
Saturday’s match could be pivotal for both clubs as they aim to climb away from the relegation zone in the final stretch of the National 3 season.
