Canisius at Niagara
NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Niagara Purple Eagles delivered a commanding defensive performance, shutting out the visiting Canisius Golden Griffins 2-0 in an NCAA men’s soccer match Wednesday night at Niagara Field.
Defender Zachary Applewhite was the catalyst for the home side, contributing a goal and an assist to propel Niagara to its sixth victory of the season. The win solidifies the Purple Eagles’ position as a formidable contender, improving their record to 6-2-2. The loss extends a difficult stretch for Canisius, which fell to 2-5-1.
The match, played before an intimate crowd of 452, defied the high-scoring projection from Interstat, which had simulated a 3-2 Niagara victory and gave the Purple Eagles a 75.1 percent probability to win. Instead, the story was one of Niagara’s defensive solidity and opportunistic finishing.
After a scoreless first half that saw limited clear chances, the Purple Eagles broke through in the 79th minute. The breakthrough was orchestrated by Applewhite, who delivered a precise assist to midfielder Tommy Mittelstadt just moments after Mittelstadt had entered the match as a substitute. Mittelstadt made an immediate impact, finding the net to give Niagara a crucial 1-0 lead.
Applewhite, who had been a persistent threat, then sealed the victory for the Purple Eagles in the 84th minute. The defender scored a goal of his own, providing the final margin and capping a standout individual performance before being substituted out of the match immediately afterward.
The two second-half goals were more than enough for the Niagara defense, which effectively neutralized the Canisius attack. The Golden Griffins, who have now been shut out in four of their last five matches, struggled to generate consistent offensive pressure throughout the contest.
The result continues a stark contrast in form for the two programs. Niagara has now won three of its last four matches, a run that includes a 3-0 victory over Saint Peter’s on Oct. 25. The Purple Eagles’ only recent setback was a 3-1 road loss to Siena on Oct. 18.
Canisius, meanwhile, is mired in a prolonged scoring drought. The Golden Griffins have now lost four consecutive matches, having been outscored 9-0 during that skid. Their last goal came in a 4-1 loss to Sacred Heart on Oct. 18, and their last positive result was a 2-2 draw with Cleveland State on Sept. 6.
The match was a physical affair, reflected in a flurry of second-half substitutions as both coaches looked to alter the game’s tempo. Canisius made a double change at halftime, withdrawing Mason Petrucci and Eliott Weber, and continued to make multiple substitutions in the latter stages in an attempt to find a spark.
Niagara managed the game effectively in the final minutes, making strategic changes to preserve energy and see out the clean sheet. The victory provides significant momentum for the Purple Eagles as they push toward the postseason, while the Golden Griffins are left searching for answers to reverse their fortunes.
