Eastern Illinois at Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (Interstat) — The Lindenwood Lions, one of the nation’s top collegiate men’s soccer teams, saw their potent offense stymied in a 1-1 draw with the Eastern Illinois Panthers on Thursday night in an NCAA Division I match.

Entering the contest with an eight-game winning streak and having shut out Eastern Illinois 3-0 just four weeks prior, the Lions were heavy favorites. Interstat’s game simulator projected a 2-0 Lindenwood victory, and its ELO rating system gave the Lions an 83 percent probability of winning.

Despite the odds, the visiting Panthers (2-6-2) managed to secure a result on the road, halting Lindenwood’s perfect season and handing the Lions (8-1-2) their first blemish in the loss column.

The game’s scoring opened in the first half. Lindenwood midfielder Gavin Csiszar, who played the full 90 minutes, provided the assist on a goal from forward Luca Bartoni. Bartoni, who started the match, found the net before being substituted out at halftime.

Eastern Illinois responded after the break, netting the equalizer to level the score. The goal thwarted Lindenwood’s attempt to secure a ninth consecutive victory.

The match was characterized by frequent substitutions, with Eastern Illinois making a flurry of changes near the half-hour mark, replacing five players in a span of less than four minutes. Lindenwood also made significant adjustments at halftime, including the removal of goalscorer Bartoni.

Lindenwood forward Sebastia Cerda Tous, who entered the game as a substitute in the 42nd minute, recorded an assist during his 48 minutes of action.

The draw extends Eastern Illinois’ recent run of improved form. After a difficult start to the season, the Panthers are now unbeaten in their last three matches, with two wins and a draw. Their previous game was a 2-0 victory over Southern Indiana on Oct. 19.

For Lindenwood, the result snaps a dominant stretch in which they had outscored opponents 14-2 over their previous five matches. Their last result was a 2-1 win over Houston Christian on Oct. 19. Their only other non-win this season was a scoreless draw with SIU Edwardsville on Oct. 9 and a 1-0 loss to Liberty on Oct. 12.

The two teams have now met twice this season, with Lindenwood winning the first encounter decisively before being held to a draw in the rematch.

Eastern Illinois will look to continue its momentum when it hosts SIU Edwardsville on Sunday, Nov. 2. Lindenwood’s next opponent was not listed in the provided information.
