Rider at Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Marist Red Foxes delivered a commanding performance on Friday night, decisively defeating the Rider Broncs 3-1 in an NCAA Division I men’s soccer match.

Playing before a crowd of 790 at Tenney Stadium, the Red Foxes outperformed pregame projections, which had heavily favored them but predicted a lower-scoring affair. The victory improved Marist’s record to 5-2-1, while Rider’s struggles continued as they fell to 1-7-1.

The Marist attack was a multifaceted effort, with three different players finding the net. The Red Foxes set the tone early, with defender Gijs Verheul opening the scoring in the first half. The offensive pressure continued after the break, with midfielder Jonathan Salguero and forward Chris Verheul each adding a goal to secure the win.

Salguero’s goal came in the 67th minute, assisted by Benjamin Mills, extending Marist’s lead. Chris Verheul, who entered the game as a substitute, sealed the victory with a goal in the 88th minute, assisted by Caio Cavaletti. Adriano Iannello also recorded an assist for the Red Foxes.

The match featured numerous substitutions as both coaches adjusted their tactics. A significant series of changes for Marist came just before the 35-minute mark, which saw Skyler Cunha and Evan Marques make way for Miles Douglas and Jonathan Salguero, while Caio Cavaletti was substituted for Benjamin Mills. Salguero and Marques would later be involved in a series of second-half swaps.

The result extends Marist’s positive momentum in conference play. Prior to this match, the Red Foxes were coming off a 3-0 loss to Sacred Heart on Oct. 15 but had secured key victories over Mount Saint Mary’s and Lehigh in September.

For Rider, the loss marks another difficult result in a challenging season. The Broncs have now lost seven of their last eight matches, with their only positive result being a 3-3 draw against Siena on Oct. 4. Their lone victory this season came against George Washington on Sept. 1.

Marist looks to carry this momentum into its next contest, a road match against Siena on Wednesday, Oct. 29. Rider will seek to end its skid when it returns home to face Sacred Heart on Saturday, Nov. 1.
