San Diego Loyal vs Detroit City

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The San Diego Loyal will host Detroit City FC in a rare January USL Championship fixture this Sunday at Torero Stadium, a match pitting two clubs emerging from extended offseason breaks under very different circumstances.

The 2026 season opener for both teams is set for a 5 p.m. PST kickoff on Jan. 18. It marks an unusually early start to the campaign, with most of the league’s clubs not scheduled to begin play until early spring.

Detroit City arrives having last played a competitive match on Sept. 20, 2025, a 1-0 home loss to Lexington SC that concluded its previous season. San Diego’s hiatus has been significantly longer; its last official outing was a 4-3 extra-time playoff defeat to Phoenix Rising on Oct. 23, 2023. The Loyal did not compete in the 2024 or 2025 USL Championship seasons, making this match a long-awaited return to action for the club and its supporters.

According to analytics firm Interstat, Detroit City enters as a slight favorite. The company’s ELO rating system gives Detroit a 53.30% probability of winning. Furthermore, its game simulator projects a 2-1 victory for the visiting side.

The match offers few recent results for comparison, placing a greater emphasis on offseason roster building and preseason form. For San Diego, the game is the first of a scheduled slate that quickly resumes a more traditional summer calendar. The Loyal’s next contest after Sunday is not until Saturday, June 6, 2026, when they are slated to host Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC—a gap indicating this January date is a standalone special event rather than the start of a continuous schedule.

Sunday’s forecast in San Diego calls for sunny conditions with temperatures near 68 degrees, setting an ideal stage for the Loyal’s return and Detroit’s quest to start its season with a road victory.
