Kedah vs Terengganu

ALOR SETAR, Malaysia (Interstat) — In a thrilling Malaysian Super League encounter that defied pregame projections, Kedah and Terengganu played to a 2-2 draw Friday at Stadium Darul Aman.

The match, part of Week 22 of the MAS Super League season, featured a dramatic comeback from the home side and a flurry of late activity that saw the projected favorites, Terengganu, surrender a late lead. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 1-1 final, while its ELO system gave Terengganu a 61% probability to win outright.

Terengganu, the visiting side, opened the scoring early. Mohamad Faisal bin Abdul Halim found the net in just the 4th minute, giving his team an immediate advantage. The visitors doubled their lead in the 18th minute through Tchétché Hermann Brice Kipré, putting Kedah in a significant early hole.

Kedah, however, began its methodical fightback before the halftime whistle. Defender Moritz Eder pulled one back for the home side in the 31st minute, heading in service to cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into the break.

The second half saw Kedah complete its comeback in a swift, five-minute span. Substitute Johannes Tartarotti, who entered the match after halftime, made an immediate impact by scoring the equalizing goal in the 54th minute. Just six minutes later, forward Nico Weitlaner put Kedah ahead 3-2, completing a stunning reversal from the two-goal deficit.

Terengganu responded with pressure, and Kipré secured his brace and a point for his team with a crucial leveling goal in the 74th minute. The drama continued into the final stages as Kedah pushed for a winner. Midfielder Florian Rieder appeared to have delivered it, scoring in the 85th minute to put Kedah ahead 4-3.

However, in a final twist, the match was leveled for good in the 88th minute. The decisive goal for Kedah’s final tally came amid a tense finale that also included a pair of yellow cards. Kedah’s Luca Meisl was booked in the 78th minute, and Terengganu’s Felix Gschossmann, who assisted on his team’s final goal, received a yellow card in the 82nd minute.

The result leaves both teams still seeking their first league victory of the season. Terengganu’s Super League record now stands at one win, one draw and zero losses, while Kedah’s record adjusts to zero wins, one loss and one draw. Their overall records across all competitions mirror those league standings.

Key performances included Tartarotti’s impactful goal off the bench for Kedah, alongside goals from Eder, Weitlaner and Rieder. Gschossmann and Meisl provided critical assists for their respective sides in the high-scoring affair.

The draw provided a share of the points in Alor Setar, with both teams demonstrating resilient attacking play in a match that significantly exceeded its expected goal total and provided a compelling start to the league’s weekend fixtures.
